Department of English

Department of English

Departmental Overview

Following the establishment of the college in 2014, the Department of English started offering Honours and General Courses from the 2015-2016 academic session. Initially, the department had a small student body and was led by two faculty members. Although the Department is currently operating with a single dedicated faculty member following the transfer of another faculty member on 13.12.2022, it continues to provide a high-quality education and engaging academic experience.

The Department of English offers undergraduate courses under two frameworks: the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, as per the University of Kalyani. According to the syllabus approved by the University of Kalyani, the Department provides both Core/Major Courses and General Elective/Minor Courses. Additionally, all undergraduate students at the college are required to complete Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) in Communicative English, which is conducted by the Department.

The undergraduate program in English is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in English Literature. It covers a broad spectrum of texts, authors, literary movements, trends, theories, and schools of criticism, equipping students for advanced study and research in the field. The syllabus also has a language component intended to train the student in reading, comprehension and writing skills. In addition to traditional lectures, the teaching methods include audio-visual techniques, student seminars, and class discussions. Continuous Internal Assessment is a key component of the curriculum. Evaluations methods include term papers, seminars, class tests and viva voce.

The faculty members of the Department regularly attend seminars, present research papers at national and international conferences, and publish their work in peer-reviewed books and journals. Faculty members are also actively involved in academic duties such as serving as paper setters and examiners for various university and recruitment examinations.

Students of the Department have consistently achieved a high pass percentage. Additionally, some students have secured placements in organizations such as the West Bengal Police and Indian Railways.

English Department at GGDC, Tehatta aims to develop students' proficiency in English language and literature, equipping them with critical thinking skills and creative abilities essential for both academic and professional success. We strive to create a stimulating learning environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and a deep appreciation for literary studies.
